A&E Picks Up Boston-Set Docu-Reality Series Produced By Mark Wahlberg

A&E has given a six-episode order to an untitled docu-reality series executive produced by Mark Wahlberg, which is set in his native Boston. This marks the first unscripted series for Wahlberg, who is executive producing through his Closest to the Hole Prods along with frequent collaborator Stephen Levinson of Leverage, Bill Thompson of Bill Thompson Prods. and veteran reality producer Stephanie Drachkovitch of 44 Blue Prods as well as Jennifer Colbert who serves as showrunner.

The initial impetus for the project, which was first ordered as a pilot by A&E in November, came from the tough, hard-as-nails female characters in Wahlberg‘s Oscar-nominated feature The Fighter. Wahlberg and Thompson were inspired by the women’s spirit and set out to find a group of those types of Boston girls going through challenging times and tell their story. The series, whose main themes are exceeding expectations and getting second chances, follows the intertwining lives of an unlikely quartet of friends, all from different working-class Boston families. The four friends struggle to break through their blue-collar surroundings, in hopes of achieving their dreams. Surrounded by a close-knit circle of well-intentioned parents, their own young children, and several boyfriends, they hustle daily to make ends meet — and roll with the punches, aspiring for greatness, but finding themselves shackled by reality.

Mark Wahlberg Endures Getting a Spray Tan in ‘Pain & Gain’

It’s no surprise that making a movie called “Pain & Gain” is a tough job.

“The most uncomfortable thing about filming this movie was having a spray tan every week,” said Mark Wahlberg. “I don’t like the sun but Michael Bay insisted I be as tan as possible. I’d do it on the balcony of my hotel room. So there I am in my underwear getting a spray tan and being photographed by the paparazzi.”

Yes, that’s tough. But as Wahlberg told it at the Crosby Street Hotel, where the Paramount pic about body builders had its Gotham preem on April 16, it wasn’t all hard work.

“There’s so much beautiful eye candy in Miami,” noted Wahlberg.

Dwayne Johnson and Michael Rispoli also star.

“It’s about three guys that go to the gym. Lots of people go to the gym and will relate to the lifestyle portrayed in the film,” said Rispoli, who is working on an Off Broadway play about Jimmy Breslin.

After the screening, guests partied at Jimmy at the James Hotel on Thompson Street, where Fifty Cent, Billy Magnussen and Equinox CEO Harvey Spevak mingled.

“It feels like a Quentin Tarantino-type movie that’s being marketed to a diverse audience. Like the film ‘Pulp Fiction,’ ‘Pain & Gain’ has interesting characters,” said Spevak, who added that both Wahlberg and Johnson trained at Equinox in Miami while filming the movie there.

Michael Bay Dishes on Dwayne Johnson’s Baby Oil Routine, Mark Wahlberg’s Beauty Shots on Pain & Gain Set

It wasn’t all dramatic action and stunts on the set of Pain & Gain.

Director Michael Bay talked with E! News on the red carpet for Paramount Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas last night, and dished on some funny moments shared with Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg while shooting the film.

“Dwayne, you have to keep a 3-foot perimeter,” Bay revealed, “because he has a woman professional just lubing him up with baby oil. You get the stuff all over your outfit, you wreck your clothes.

Being the go-to person to rub the erstwhile Rock’s bod down with baby oil? Sounds so tedious…

Bay also noted, “Mark could pound chicken very good. He ate nine meals a day, he gained 40 pounds, he’s like a machine. He told me, ‘Week two is going to be my peak so get all your beauty shots week two, week three, ’cause then I got to lose 40 pounds and go on a Denzel movie next.’” (Wahlberg was referring to his upcoming crime drama 2 Guns, costarring Denzel Washington.)

Wahlberg and Johnson talked with E! News about their flick during their press junket, telling us how they’re not afraid to do their own stunts. But, hmmm, they conveniently left out the baby-oil and chicken-pounding details.

Pain & Gain hits theaters April 26.

Buff ‘n’ tough actors like Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson aren’t afraid of movie stunts—but they’re not afraid to let the professionals step in sometimes, either.

The Pain & Gain costars told E! News at the film’s press junket that they did a lot of their own action scenes in the film, but there were some doubles around for the extra intense stuff.

“I had a double for when I jumped off of the thing and getting hit by a car the second time,” Wahlberg, who was icing a hornet sting on his pinky finger (of all ailments!), told us. “They kinda ratcheted me up from the car, but I’m not afraid to use a double.”

Johnson added, “We both have great stunt doubles, but with a movie like this, the authenticity was important, so we were down to do our own stunts and it’s not a stunt-heavy movie to begin with, it’s more character-driven.”

“But when it required me to jump three, four stories off the building—bring in the stunt man.”

Wahlberg and Johnson also dished on whether or not they enjoyed the nightlife while shooting in Miami and if they’ve ever had to do the walk of shame (dun, dun, dunnn).
